I’ve achieved many things this year, and still I didn’t feel good enough. People were proud of me, but I wasn’t. All I saw was what I still had not done..because I hadn’t addressed the unresolved trauma I had been battling with. Now and for 2019 I want to reach higher heights, and I want that for you too but that can’t happen if we don’t heal. A lot of men struggle when it comes to dealing with their emotions, internally and externally. Many grew up being very sensitive but were subjected to shaming and judgement. For a black man growing up in this world, they’re taught to be strong, and to never let anyone see them as weak.

How often have you found yourself at a crossroads—you know one of those REALLY HARD ones?; the one where you have to decide whether it hurts more to let go or it hurts more to hold on. I know I’ve found myself there more than once. Relationships, friendships, careers. I was not equipped emotionally to handle the aftermath of letting go. It is NOT easy. But rest assured that whatever it is you’re scared of letting go, something better will eventually fill that void. That broken relationship? That one-sided friendship? The unfulfilling career? The unsupportive family? Just. Let. Go.

#12daysofmentalhealthmas Holidays can be a very overwhelming time. Don’t forget to Take care of You, First. Maintain your daily routine, treatments, therapy sessions etc.

Reinvent You. Frustrated with where your life is going? Unhappy with the mundane routine of everyday? Or maybe you just need a fresh start. Try something new! Reinvent yourself. It can be as simple as a getting a new hair do, or as complex as reevaluating your strengths, weaknesses, job, life direction or personality traits. Reinventing you is an opportunity to move towards living your best life. For example, if you are terribly shy, reinventing you could be about learning how put yourself out there or to gain more confidence. Here’s some helpful hints on how to begin:
1. Evaluate the areas of your life that you are unhappy with. Be sure to chose things that you have control over. This is not a wave the magic wand exercise.
2. Start with one area at a time. Decide on why that area needs reinventing and chose the easiest fix to tackle first.
3. Decide on what would make that area of your life better and how to reinvent that one particular area.
4. Make that change
5. Celebrate that change.
If you are finding difficulty doing this exercise on your own, work with a close friend or a trusted therapist.
