Comuna 13. Once, the most dangerous neighborhood of the most dangerous city in the world. Guerillas and drug cartels ran the place, causing thousands of deaths and inflicting fear in each resident.
In the last years, the comuna started experiencing positive changes. A metro station opened up the access to the rest of the city and outdoor escalators help the locals move faster on the steep hills of the neighborhood. Graffiti and hip-hop are now present as ways of protest against the violence. Free English lessons for the residents are a daily happening and tours in the area attract travelers, providing a living for some of the locals.
There are still parts of comuna 13, which witness shootings and killings at the present moment, and are no-go areas. Not all of the comuna's 130,000 residents benefit from the positive changes and illegal groups still control areas of this vast neighborhood.
But, as one local told us today, the changes of the last years show that the impossible can happen and hopefully, the impossible will continue happening until the 'once most dangerous neighborhood in the world' will become the best example of social and community transformation.
