I feel physically sick at the number of times I hear the word ’terrorist’ being thrown around in reference to those seeking refuge from LITERAL terrorists. Sometimes it is said with vitriol, sometimes with a quiet fear, but tossed around recklessly nonetheless.
I know them by name, some of these wrongfully accused brothers and sisters. I cannot stomach the gross misrepresentation, a slander they shoulder while carrying the weight of gratitude for their achieved or anticipated safety in our country with the worry over friends and family still in their homelands. I cannot.
@khosseini writes in his book, Sea Prayer, of a refugee mother speaking to her child: “Oh, but if they saw, my darling.
Even half of what you have.
If only they saw.
They would say kinder things, surely.”
Say kinder things.
