Material innovation company @boltthreads’ new leather-like fabric Mylo is grown entirely from mycelium cells.
Mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms, grows in vast networks forming a 3D micro-scale mesh structure.
By growing mycelium cells in beds of corn stalks with other nutrients, Bolt Threads’ scientists are able to encourage the mycelium to self-assemble into organised mats, which are then compressed to desired thickness and tanned using natural materials. A beautiful, durable, and sustainable material is born – without polluting ground water, using toxic chemicals, or killing anyone
This year, Bolt Threads unveiled a partnership with @stellamccartney, who produced a handbag using Mylo for display at the Victoria and Albert’s Museum’s Fashion From Nature exhibit. See more about Bolt Threads and Mylo at vildamagazine.com
