The Stairs leading to the Jama Masjid inside Asirgarh Fort wears a weary look as decades of neglect take a toll on her beauty.
Those grand days of the 16th Century when this place of worship was commissioned must have been something else.
I could almost see Badshah Akbar enter the fort doors on his ornately decorated Elephant, his Army in tow, nodding to slogans, jubiliant of a grand victory of not only the fort but the Deccan region, in totality.
As he climbed these very Mosque steps in radiant strides, the steps would have squeezed in delight as a child. The gallantry had assembled to pay their homage to the Almighty and obleisance to their victorious Emperor. It was a mix of greens trees, red carpets, blue skies, light music and laughter, colourful dresses in all finery and decorations on the wall. The complete Royal works.
Years of faith and humble sighs crossed these very steps as the Fort saw many turns of centuries to its current dilapidated state now. Wrinkles appeared as crevices, and grey hair appeared as random weed, ageing her with every onslaught of the monsoon.
Now, only a place of tourism, the Mosque still stands tall, the steps with loneful eyes of her missing Mughal King and days of Glory. A question resonates in the eerie silence of the breeze: Will she ever be taken back to an era of richness and or will she wither away as a photo in history books.... The original snap was in Technicolor, but tweeked it to B&W to get the Simile effective.
