LIFTOFF! NASA astronauts Drew Feustel (@astro_feustel) and Ricky Arnold (@astro_ricky) and cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev (@Olegmks) of Roscosmos left Earth at 1:14 EDT to head toward the International Space Station (@iss).After a two-day flight, the new crew members will dock to the station’s docking module on Friday, March 23 and the new residents will begin their mission!

There are currently three people living on the space station, soon to be joined by the three crew members that launched today. While living aboard humanity’s only permanently occupied microgravity laboratory, they will work on hundreds of experiments in biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science.

A ghostly crescent of the Moon is seen in this image captured by European Space Agency (@europeanspaceagency) astronaut Alexander Gerst (@Astro_Alex_esa) from the vantage point of the International Space Station (@iss). He posted it to social media saying, “By orbiting the Earth almost 16 times per day, the #ISS crew travel the distance to the Moon and back – every day.” Currently, six humans are living and working on the space station, which orbits our planet from 250 miles above at 17,500 mph. While onboard, they conduct important science and research that not only benefits life here on Earth, but will help send humans deeper into the solar system than ever before.

Happy Independence Day, America! 🇺🇸 With red, white and blue LED lights to mark the occasion, the Advanced Plant Habitat is one subtle way our astronauts can celebrate the holiday aboard the orbiting laboratory.
So far, this recent addition to the International Space Station (@ISS) has been used to grow and study Arabidopsis, small flowering plants related to cabbage and mustard, and Dwarf Wheat.
Because gravity is a constant downward force on Earth, researchers take advantage of the microgravity environment of the space station to achieve a clearer perspective of plant growth habits. Gravity is one of the major cues plants use to guide their growth, but microgravity can act as a kind of mute button that suppresses the role of gravity, enabling researchers to see what other cues take charge. A monitoring system equipped with 180 sensors, including water usage, carbon dioxide levels, light levels, temperature, humidity and oxygen in the growth chamber, and temperature, humidity and oxygen levels in the plant root systems, allows us to constantly analyze how plants grow in space.

Sunrise is seen creeping across Earth as the green glow of the southern hemisphere's aurora dances below the International Space Station (@iss). NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold snapped this image from his perch high above the planet on humanity's orbiting laboratory on April 9.

The glimmering lights of auroras provide spectacular views, but also capture the imagination of scientists who study incoming energy and particles from our Sun. Auroras are one effect of such energetic particles, which can speed out from the Sun both in a steady stream called the solar wind or from giant eruptions known as coronal mass ejections or CMEs.
After a trip toward Earth that can last three days, the solar particles and magnetic fields cause the release of particles already trapped near Earth, which in turn trigger reactions in the upper atmosphere in which oxygen and nitrogen molecules release photons of light. The result: the Northern and Southern lights.

Special Delivery! After launching early Monday morning, Orbital ATK's (@Orbital_ATK) Cygnus cargo craft arrived at the International Space Station (@ISS) this morning. The spacecraft was successfully captured using the station’s robotic arm, seen here in a photo shared by Astronaut Ricky Arnold (@Astro_Ricky). Following capture, robotic ground controllers positioned and installed Cygnus to the orbiting laboratory’s Earth-facing port of the Unity module. The spacecraft delivers supplies and scientific investigations including those that will study microbiology, physics, materials science, plant biology, liquid separation and more.

Cygnus will spend about seven weeks attached to the space station before departing in July. After it leaves the station, the uncrewed spacecraft will deploy several CubeSats before its fiery re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere as it disposes of several tons of trash.

It’s National Selfie Day! 📸Located 250 miles above Earth, the International Space Station (@ISS) provides a unique perspective for astronauts to take selfies like this photo astronaut Ricky Arnold (@Astro_Ricky) captured last week while working in the vacuum of space during a spacewalk.
Along with astronaut Drew Feustel, the duo completed the sixth spacewalk at the space station in 2018, lasting 6 hours, 49 minutes. The two astronauts installed new high-definition cameras that will provide enhanced views during the final phase of approach and docking of the SpaceX Crew Dragon and Boeing Starliner commercial crew spacecraft that will soon begin launching from American soil. The spacewalk was the 211th in support of assembly and maintenance of the unique orbiting laboratory where humans have been living and working continuously for nearly 18 years. Spacewalkers have now spent a total of 54 days, 23 hours and 29 minutes working outside the station.

If you have anyone in your family that likes space or science you have to get the SkyGuide app. Our oldest daughter loves space & is dying to go to Space Camp. The last 3 nights the SkyGuide app has notified us that the space station was flying overhead and showed us exactly where it was. We saw it every time!! It’s amazing how large the light is & how fast it’s moving!!! It’s a ton of fun!

Anyone else use the SkyGuide app?

Should we go back? 🌔 🌚 🌝 🌗 🌜 🌛
The Moon has only been walked on by 12 people; all American males.
The first man to set foot on the Moon in 1969 was Neil Armstrong on the Apollo 11 mission, while the last man to walk on the Moon in 1972 was Gene Cernan on the Apollo 17 mission. Since then the Moon has only be visited by unmanned vehicles.

In a few hundred million years, when all that dust and gas from the center of the Orion Nebula has dissipated, new solar systems will part their way into the open void, continue to grow, and preserve their very own new worlds.
I wonder how many civilizations will they foster and will they ever realize how beautiful and violent their beginnings were?. What their Suns had to go through?. Will they preserve and cherish their own pale dot? The first home they will ever know. .

I found out today that me putting myself out there more and going after opportunities to try new things with my art had influenced a friend to self publish some stories they'd been sitting on for a while.
I'm really excited for friends and colleagues to go after new things and to grow and to make themselves uncomfortable by pushing themselves with their own art.
I'm incredibly grateful to be able to be a part of the art other people are making, whether it's editing music for performers, being a part of a show, designing flyers and ads, or making covers.
I hope to do more, and to put some of my own stuff out into the world that *I've* been sitting on for a while.
If you've got an idea, go for it. You never know who will respond to it, and who will be inspired to create.
