There was once a time when all mankind could speak nature's language. Though it seems now like some #shamanistic talent belonging only to the supremely spiritual - it's not ... and wasn't always.
Indigenous peoples around the world, still hold that deep intuitive understanding of their environment. They magically know the unknowable through their #sixthsense - the one thing their oppressors could not completely silence.
Last year, my husband met a goat farmer in Spain who knew days in advance the exact moment the billy would be born based on the size of the moon and the tides of the sea. In Australia, #conservationists collaborated with aboriginal peoples to observe how falcons drop flaming branches from bushfires to guide the flames to areas needing rebirth - controlling wildfires and feasting on the fleeing mice and lizards as mama nature's reward. Their actions drive a diverse mosaic of regrowth and increase the number of primate pray species in the long run, a truth - which until recently - was considered nothing but ' #folklore ' to tribes beyond.
This knowledge is officially known as ' #traditionalecologicalknowledge (#TEK) ' / ' #indigenousecologicalknowledge (#IEK)' / '#nativeknowledge', gained through #wisdom of experience passed down through hundreds of generations.
The tides are beginning to turn back towards natural order, and it is now indigenous peoples who are guiding conservationists, rather than the other way around. Righteously reversing the cartesian rationalism which raced us towards capitalist industrialization. An intellectual snobbery which decreed that the heart ruling the head should be looked down upon - deeming anything 'wild' as ignorant, and shushing all instinct until we forgot the language of the heart and spirit completely - and began replacing the hole it’s loss burnt inside us with ‘things’.
We have a lot to learn - and relearn - and with time racing towards a future none of us want, I hope we can embrace the enchanting wisdoms of the peoples who still have the ability to speak to and for the earth. Making a modern and happy marriage of science and sagacity which might swiftly move us forward positively.
