Photo by @paulnicklen | Taken on assignment for our recent story in @natgeo. The ever charismatic, communicative, resilient and powerful leopard seal of Antarctica. Since the time of Shackleton, leopard seals have had reputation of being vicious animals that attack humans at will. All I can tell you is that after being in the water hundreds of times with these inquisitive, thousand pound, twelve foot long seals, I see them in a completely different light. They are intelligent, playful and at times, even comical. The bigger question we must ask ourselves is are we willing to live on a planet without polar bears, narwhals, leopard seals and entire polar ecosystems because of our lack of action towards our changing climates? Every time we shop, eat and travel, we are making decisions about the type of planet we want to leave for future generations. Daisy Gilardini // Two young males spar on the coast of Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada. Usually solitary animals, in November polar bears congregate around this area to wait for the bay to freeze to take off on the pack ice to hunt for seals. Playfights during this period are common, and it is good practice for more serious standoffs that take place during mating season. Wapusk National Park, Manitoba, Canada.
