We’ve all seen them. That one guy who’s wearing an altitude mask trying to look like bane (just a lot smaller).
But is it really worth it?
The idea of the mask is to simulate high altitude training where the partial pressure of oxygen is at a lower concentration (for a given space). This causes the body to adapt to allowing the blood to carry more oxygen. Becoming more efficient basically.
But the masks don’t represent the pressures that are found at high altitude. Instead it reduces the flow of air, a process called inspiratory muscle training.
Here are some of the reasons it’s pretty pointless for the average lifter.♂️
The benefits of training at altitude fade after about 4 weeks.
It doesn’t allow for the Valsalva manoeuvre to be performed correctly.
If you have poor aerobic capacity to begin with then what’s the point? ♂️ you might as well do more cardiovascular exercise first to boost your VO2 max.
At the end of the day I think they are pretty pointless, spending upwards of 100 pounds for something like that just makes you realise how messed up the fitness industry is in the end. ♂️
