Photo by @amivitale. Relatives of Naz Banu mourn over her body during her funeral in the northern Kashmir town of Mirhama. Ongoing military conflicts in the region, in addition to the devastating impacts of climate change and the threat of rape and sexual violence, make daily life for women in India a battle. According to @amnesty, more than 338,000 crimes against women in were registered in 2016.

This week I’m sharing images of women around the world, exploring their lives and the vital roles they play in their communities.

Film by @amivitale | An elephant is so much more than the sum of its parts. Elephants are very social animals and highly sensitive. Elephants can recognize themselves and have brain structures similar to humans. After a death, elephants show signs of grief and may return year after year to visit the bones of the deceased, touching them with their trunks. In addition to all of this, they also play a vital role in the ecosystem, clearing brush and trees and allowing grasses to flourish, which in turn helps bulk grazers thrive, and above them, apex predators.

Photo by @amivitale. Workers pick tea in the lush fields outside Nyungwe National Park in southwest Rwanda. The country’s volcanic soil and rolling hills help create ideal growing conditions for the nation’s largest export.

I photographed this moving story of hope and resilience for AFAR Magazine (@afarmedia). It's on newsstands now in the July/August 2018 issue and explores Rwanda's efforts to renew and reestablish itself in the decades following the 1994 genocide or you can read online at bit.ly/AfarRwanda

@traveller4world1@traveller4world1Video by @amivitale. Happy 2nd Anniversary Reteti! To celebrate, mud hole fun for everyone. Here, Shaba tries to playfully squish Nadasoit. Nadasoit arrived at Reteti when she was only 2-weeks-old. As she began to get stronger, she became one of the first orphans that proxy matriach Shaba took under her wing. Shaba was constantly with Nadasoit and Nadasoit was constantly with Shaba. Today, now that Nadasoit's a big strong 2-year-old elephant, she's adopted the nurturing traits of Shaba, and both constantly care for and help those younger than they are.
It has been an amazing privilege to witness Nadasoit's transformation, the transformation of Shaba and Nadasoit's relationship and the transformation of Reteti as it has gone from being a tiny refuge for orphaned and abandoned elephant calves to a world renowned facility that has helped rescue and nurture more than 34 elephant calves while drving the growth of all important community based conservation throughout northern Kenya in just two short years. Thank you for following along on this journey and supporting Reteti every step of the way.

Meet Lemorijo! This little elephant gets his afternoon bottle from Matiba. The rapidly growing orphaned baby elephants like him are fed two liter bottles of special formula every three hours per day.
Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), in north of Kenya is the first community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in Africa. The sanctuary takes care of injured elephants and helps them to heal and later, be returned back to the wild.

Photo by @amivitale // Priyanka, along with thousands of Catholic devotees from Sri Lanka, attend the annual pilgrimage at Saint Anthony's Church on Kachchativu Island near Jaffna. Roman Catholic pilgrims from neighboring India also joined in the service to celebrate the annual feast to St. Anthony, the patron saint of fishermen. The feast was suspended for much of Sri Lanka's three-decade conflict and today devotees from both counties are allowed to come to the tiny island just once a year.

Sri Lanka is a densely populated, seemingly idyllic island in the Indian Ocean finally emerging from decades of a brutal civil war. Today it is known for its beautiful white beaches, wildlife and culture. The hope is that it can move forward and begin to solve some of the issues of postwar reconciliation, a story I covered for National Geographic (@natgeo). Photo by @amivitale. In the remote areas of Burkina Faso, villagers must travel for miles to reach a pump well offering clean water. Most families end up drinking dirty water rather than walk the miles it takes to get to the well. The trek for clean water can take hours each day and can put women and children at risk of sexual assault, animal attacks, or other injury.

This week I’m sharing images of women around the world, exploring their lives and the vital roles they play in their communities.
