40 years ago, in the spring of 1978, Colleen Crosby and Bronson Baker opened the doors to the first coffee roaster in Santa Cruz at the “Top of the Mall” on Pacific Avenue. Fueled by passion and a love of coffee, the two played a pivotal role in the cultural phenomena of specialty coffee as we now know it today.
Santa Cruz Coffee created the first ever pour over bar in 1979, known as the BrewBar. The BrewBar provides immense latitude for adjustment, making it easy for the public to understand the wonderful variety and subtle qualities that exist in different coffees around the world.
When TransFair brought Fair Trade certification to the United States, Colleen and Bronson enthusiastically embraced the concept, becoming the first Fair Trade certified roaster in Central California. Colleen Crosby became a vocal proponent for Fair Trade, educating the public about its importance and actively encouraging congress, roasters, and coffee drinkers alike to consider the merits of and support coffee from Certified Fair-Trade sources.
Bronson and Colleen have both been on the Specialty Coffee Association’s Sustainability Committee, the leading force in environmentally and socially conscious coffee around the globe.
It’s been 40 years since those doors first opened at the top of the mall. A lot has changed since then, in Santa Cruz, in coffee, and beyond. The long-lasting relationships we’ve developed with the farming communities that grow the coffee haven’t changed. Our careful attention to roasting detail, specially crafting each blend to the most optimal flavor profile, and reproducing that profile batch after batch, hasn’t changed. And most importantly, our gratitude towards you for supporting our coffee and our cause hasn’t changed.
We would like to thank you for taking the time to visit Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting Co. and are grateful for the opportunity to show you why coffee lovers appreciate the difference.
Here’s to 40 more.
