Today is a very important day for our city: on November 21st, from 1630, the #venetian people celebrate the liberation of #Venice from the plague.
In that year, the plague, spread throughout the northern part of Italy, hit over a quarter of the city's population.
So the doge made a vow: if the Virgin Mary had helped to free the city from the plague, a wonderful sanctuary would be built in her honour.
And it happened: the great architect Baldassarre Longhena was commissioned to build the beautiful Church of Santa Maria della Salute.
Even today this holiday is very much felt by the citizens.
We, at the #Bauer Hotel, are very pleased to celebrate this anniversary and we invite all our beloved guests to celebrate it too.
It was a tough time for our city, but it was overcome and we are still here to tell this story!
Thank you to @hannahbhuiya for sharing this great picture of Venice by the italian artist Ippolito Caffi!
