⚡️What is ENT?⚡️
A lot of people don’t know much about my specialty. In fact, I didn’t know what an ENT was until my first year of medical school. .
The field of ENT, short for Ear, Nose, and Throat is a subspecialty that deals with the medical and surgical management of the head and neck. ENT surgeons are also referred to as otorhinolaryngologists (oto for ear, rhino for nose, and laryngo for throat) or head and neck surgeons..
To become an ENT in the US, we must complete 4 years of undergraduate training, 4 years of medical school, and 5 years of residency..
Within ENT, we treat a wide spectrum of disorders among all age groups. Some of the more common conditions we see range from tonsils and ear tube surgeries in children to extensive head and neck reconstructive surgeries in older cancer patients..
Some of the surgeries we do include facial plastics, cochlear implants, skull base surgery, sinus surgery, thyroid, parotid and salivary glands, robotic surgery, airway reconstruction, and trauma. .
Some of the other conditions we manage include sleep apnea, reflux, allergies, infections, airway malformations, problems with speech and swallowing, hearing loss and dizziness.
We definitely see a lot of diversity in our training and practice which means there’s a lot to learn but is also means there’s never a dull day!
