Woke up at 3am to get to the hot air balloon on the West Bank before sunrise. The view from 2,000 feet above ground as dawn broke was stunning ❤️ one more off the bucket list!
Hit the Valley of the Kings after that with its tombs of every pharaoh, though only less than half have been discovered 😮 teams of archaeologists hard at work still uncovering the rest. Sadly a lot of tomb raiders had made off with treasures and parts of the tombs since before Christ, and earthquakes and floods destroyed quite a bit. Still incredible! Went into Ramses IV’s, Ramses IX’s and Merneptah’s tombs - each very different, but all gorgeous ❤️ Drove to Queen Hatshepsut’s Temple next - she made herself Pharaoh (only men could rule back then), and dressed as a man. Her stepson eventually became Pharaoh after her death and destroyed all traces of her on the temple, leaving only images or cartouches of gods untouched. It’s winter, and we were there at 9am - but it was already blazing hot 🥵 .
After lunch, in the searing winter heat, it was Karnak on the East Bank - dedicated to Amun-Ra. Probably the largest and oldest temple complex in the world, at 51 acres, with pharaoh after pharaoh adding to it during their reigns. It used to have 14 Obelisks with gold tops, and was fully painted and decorated though now only some parts retain the original art and colors due to natural disasters, time, and thievery. Only 1 Temple is safe for visitors, the other 2 are still being restored. Every day teams from around the world dig for more & more antiquities here in Luxor, and I can’t wait to see what’s discovered in future! .
