This is Luis Fernando Velez. On our trip through Colombia we visited him on his Finca el Socorro, a farm near Marsella close to Medellín. There, he cultivates and processes cocoa and coffee. Apart from that, he also cultivates plenty of plants in his garden which are actually threatened with extinction. His place was magical and reminded me of paradise.
When we arrived, the table was set for us and Luis and his wife offered us a variety of delicious dishes, freshly picked fruits and the best orange juice I’ve ever had. And they even had a wedding cake for our just married couple!
When we were all eating together, listening to Luis‘ words, he said something he touched my heart with: „It doesn’t matter to me if my guests speak the same language or not, because I understand them with my heart.“ This moved me to tears.
Later, Luis proudly presented us his garden and showed us all the plants that were growing there, providing him with food. Walking along green paths, being offered all kinds of fruits, herbs and other edible plants by Mother Nature - this truly felt like paradise!
Eventually, we even made our own chocolate. We roasted the cocoa beans, peeled them and ground the cocoa nibs until they became 100% chocolate. Sounds and looks super delicious but in fact it was way too bitter to eat!
The guys also got the chance to experience the work of peeling coffee beans - definitely not the easiest job!
