Asides from a select few, namely Ishiguro and Murukami, Japanese authors seem to have less recognition in the Western world which is a shame because many are deserving of more attention. After reading Kitchen, (the first Banana Yoshimoto novel I read which I will post about at some point), I was immediately drawn into the world of Japanese cult fiction. Yoshimoto in particular, has a certain capability of addressing the unusual whilst also bringing it into the realm of normality. This in turn, gives a greater insight and understanding of many issues that we don't often associate with Japanese culture but that are very much a part of our own. Light, easily readable and perfectly enjoyable, it is clear to see why many of Yoshimoto's novels are regarded as being famous in the Japanese cult fiction genre.
