The ending sunset shot from The Gift and visuals from Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Ivan’s Childhood and Edward Steichen’s photograph Moonlight: The Pond. The shot from The Gift was unscripted, a “in the moment” capture; however, in a special way it too expresses how each creative is a sum of his or her experiences, loves and passions, thoughts and visions. Tarkovsky had a wonderful way, for example, to describe influence: “But what is influence? It is, for example, the artist’s selection of the environment in which he wants to work, the people, of collaborators with whom he wants to work, and with whom he will feel comfortable with.” Those we admire, whether they work in our creative fields or not, are deep down reflections of our creative selves. Hence, the importance of expanding your palette. Hence, the double importance of being true to yourself.
