Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown origin (CKDu) has been positively identified in the #MiddleEast, #Asia, #South Asia, and #CentralAmerica. It is a deadly epidemic mainly affecting #farm workers and their families, the poor and the young. Photographer @edkashi, of @viiphoto has traveled to #Nicaragua, #ElSalvador, #India, and #SriLanka to document the fatal disease, now spreading to South America and perhaps further. The ongoing work, titled "CKDu – In The Hot Zone," shows the multi-generational impact of #CKDu and the plight of #agrarian communities on a human level.
This photo essay was exhibited in #Perpignan at #visapourlimage2017 festival. Pictured is an image from the photo essay. The caption: Mass screening is conducted by a local CKDu organization, with support from the government. Here, in this CKDu-affected town, 342 secondary school students are lining up for blood tests.
