BETTER CALL SAUL season 1 show review:
What season 1 does so well is that it does a complete 180 degree turn from BREAKING BAD. Down to the pacing and cinematography, season 1 of BETTER CALL SAUL feels nothing like BREAKING BAD. Moving at a very slow pace and filmed with stark, bright cinematography, season 1 is its own beast that doesn’t rely on BREAKING BAD to elevate its own material, and gives us a show that feels fresh, different, and original.
Bob Odenkirk as the fan favourite lawyer Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman is once again excellent in this role. What season 1 does so great with his character is that he isn’t a complete rehash of what we saw in BREAKING BAD; he isn’t just the comedic character we have known to come and love from BREAKING BAD; here he has lots of depth, and is truly an interesting character, once you start to see just how unaware he is as a person, every time he does something wrong, as if rarely feeling the slightest guilt for his actions. Jonathon Banks also returning as the badass grandpa Mike is a definite win. He does not choose to show a lot of emotions, and that makes his character so compelling because you’re constantly thinking what’s going inside of his head. As for the characters we’re introduced to in the show, Kim, Howard and Chuck are all brilliant additions to the BREAKING BAD UNIVERSE. In season 1 we don’t know much or really care about them, and that is one major flaw I have with this season. Besides Jimmy and Mike, I really don’t care much about the Supporting characters, which is kind of a downer because in season 1 of BREAKING BAD all the supporting characters like Hank, Marie and Skylar were great.
The writing and directing is fantastic as always; it’s obvious the creators of the show care about authenticity, for example the negotiating scene in episode 2 has been praised by real life lawyers on how to negotiate with criminals in real life situations, and the dialogue in that scene and just the season over all is brilliantly written.
Overall season 1 is no masterpiece, but an excellent introduction to this great spin-off.
