Saturn’s moon Enceladus drifts before the rings and the tiny moon Pandora in this view that our Cassini spacecraft captured on Nov. 1, 2009. The entire scene is backlit by the Sun, providing striking illumination for the icy particles that make up both the rings and the jets emanating from the south pole of Enceladus.

Pandora was on the opposite side of the rings from Cassini and Enceladus when the image was taken. This view looks toward the night side on Pandora as well, which is lit by dim golden light reflected from Saturn.

Saturn Rings, Enceladus & Janus.
When taking images in directions opposite from the sun, most objects appear dark. Surprisingly, however, some of Saturn's rings get brighter.

Parts of Saturn's main rings appear dark in backlit views, particularly the dense B ring (as can been seen in PIA14934). However, some rings are comparatively tenuous and made up of dust particles that tend to scatter light in roughly the original direction it was traveling. This is called "forward scattering." Because of forward scattering, rings like the F ring, which encircles the outer edge of the main rings, appear to glow brightly at this large viewing angle.

Two moons hover above the rings from this perspective -- Enceladus (313 miles or 504 kilometers across), at left, and Janus (111 miles or 179 kilometers across), at right.

This view looks toward the unilluminated side of the rings from about 0.5 degrees below the ring plane. The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on Dec. 21, 2015.

The view was acquired at a distance of approximately 750,000 miles (1.2 million kilometers) from Saturn and at a Sun-Saturn-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 136 degrees. Janus' brightness was enhanced by a factor of two to improve its visibility in this image.

The Cassini mission is a cooperative project of NASA, ESA (the European Space Agency) and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging operations center is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

Isn't Saturn beautiful? 😍

The rings swirling around Saturn consists of chunks of ice and dust. Saturn itself is made of ammonia ice and methane gas. The little dark spot on Saturn is the shadow from Saturn's moon Enceladus.⠀

Saturn - the second gas giant after Jupiter, consisting of hydrogen and helium.  A distinctive feature of Saturn are dense rings, consisting of a myriad of fragments of ice.  The most beautiful moons of the Saturian system are Titan (which is larger in size than Mercury) and cold Enceladus.  Scientists believe that in 7 million billion years, the Saturian system can be the second home of humanity.  The sun will expand its borders to the limits of the Earth and life on the planet will be impossible.  I think, after such a period, Man will find a way to save our common home.  Now Titan is like a young Earth in deep freezing, and Enceladus is covered with an ice cover under which a salty ocean is hidden.  If we imagine that the frozen ice of Enceladus will melt and become one big oceanic world ... #scifiart, #spaceart, #Saturn, #Enceladus

Woah. This trippy light image is Enceladus, backlit by the Sun in a Cassini image from November 1, 2009. Even better, you can see the icy plumes on the South Pole of the moon. The lines of light in the background are the rings of Saturn. Incredible!!!! 🚀 📷: Cassini Imaging Team/SSI/JPL/ESA/@NASA/APOD #science #space #cassini #pretty #amazing #enceladus #saturn #nasa

Happy favorite moonday! Enceladus do not let them syphon you cause you know they will... filthy entittled humans don't get me wrong I wanna come home and snuggle within your ocean vents but just because we can possibly get to you does not mean we should you feed Saturn and you do your own thing too I miss you and I love you. #peace #enceladus #seekbalance #space

And who can stop the forces of the universe? And then if the author draws in your favor, nothing else to do but to respect his will. 🤓 I love my planet and I am very happy to be under his direction for 3 consecutive years.
