10 miles along the Deadwood River and a dip in the hot springs is how we spent my first day off from work in the last 30 days. I used to think that keeping myself inside and “resting” was the best way to spend my time off, Id pass up on hiking or exploring because I was worried that Id be miserably tired going back to work after something like that. Turns out being outside, using my body and pushing myself to do things Ive never done before is the perfect reset after a few very busy weeks in a surgery suite and a coffee shop. Ive gotten to do more hiking this summer than I have in my entire life and I love it.
We were about a mile above sea level when we reached our destination point. At that elevation, the forest was already showing signs of fall. The prettiest orange hues filled the spaces between tall evergreens and the skeletons of the fire scarred hillsides.
I don’t ever remember being so attached to a summer, but this season’s change has taken a lot of mental preparation.
I’m not ready for shorter days and colder weather. This summer has been full of adventure and change, and I am sadder than I’d like to admit to see it come to a close.
In the meantime, the days are still warm enough to enjoy patio drinks and evening hikes. We’ll soak up every minute that we have left, and then we’ll get through the colder months like we do everything else. 👊🏼
Also, brace yourselves for some serious hiking photo spam. I got some amazing shots from this trip. This photo was taken by @denver.and.norah using my new 14mm 2.8. 😍 so in love with this lens!
