The most well-known and persistent tradition is linked to the toss of the coin inside the fountain: performing this act with closed eyes, turning their backs towards Palazzo Poli, one would favor a future return to the city. We ignore the origins of the tradition, which however could derive from the ancient custom of throwing sacred obolons or small gifts into the sacred sources to propitiate the local divinity, as for the wells of desires. Tradition is so universally known that tourists, even foreigners, who escape the "rite" of the coin toss are very rare.
The Municipality of Rome decided in 2006 that all the reclaimed coins (a sum equal to about three thousand and eight hundred euro per day)had to be destined for Caritas of the capital; this, however, does not prevent some "amateur" from attempting unauthorized and sanctioned personal recoveries.
According to another tradition, when water still drank from the fountain (and the water of Trevi, which today is used only for irrigation and to feed the fountains, was considered among the best in Rome, not to be calcareous) girls made her drink a glass to the boyfriend who was leaving, a glass that then shattered in a sign of good wishes and loyalty.
