I’ve mentioned it earlier, but a few weeks ago I was at a pretty low spot. LSome personal stuff was going on, and the darkness had just hit Oslo (it starts getting dark at 3 pm). I’ve often used food as a way to manage heightened emotions, and this time was no different. I told myself “you deserve this chocolate Ingrid”, over and over and over.
For me, “you deserve this” food looked like: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Not really eating a lot during the day, then 🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫 at night.
Before I continue, I want to note that there is nothing inherently wrong with these foods. They are delicious, and they can bring a lot a lot A LOT of joy.
I often USE them to make myself feel different or to fill a void. Sound familiar?
Voids like…. depression, stress, fear of failure, anxiety, loss, exhaustion, insecurity, feeling rejection, boredom (boredom is huge for me). And when something happens that might a negative feeling, my brain will go to any lengths to feel better. Because high sugar, high fat high salt gives IMMEDIATE gratification (dopamine rush) and is SO AVAILABLE TO US. No wonder it becomes a habit. And habits are POWERFUL. Doesn’t matter that you know you’ll feel like 😔😕☹️😩😟the next day. Junk food NOWWWWW is more important than thinking about tomorrow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Heres what has to break my pattern:
1️⃣Identifying triggers (Negative interactions with people are big triggers for me)
2️⃣Naming what Im feeling after the trigger has happened (sad, bored, anxious). 3️⃣Having a plan ready when brain says “HEY I know what will help! SUGAH! And lots of it!” Instead, fill up on veggies. (Boring I know, and like... the ANTIHESIS of what you actually want to do. But keep those long term effects mental and physical effects in mind.) Because of their high fiber high water content, they fill you up a ton WHILE they provide that “have to be crunching on something”(tip: Use spices or sirchacha sauce for taste intensity on cooked veggies.) THIS MEANS HAVE THEM AVAILABLE. If chocolate is right in front of you and veggies are at the store...what will u use
