Life is still and quiet at Lonesome Lake. Hope everyone is winding down their week with the same calm, stillness and peace. Unless you’re going to happy hour. Then I hope it’s 🎉. Thanks to @brettmarquis23 for sharing this photo!

You don’t always have to go up on a pegboard! If you’re a fall risk like me, here’s just a few things you can do without gaining much height. SWIPE RIGHT to see them all!

Throwback to the first @rockandicemag photo camp I participated in. I was so stoked to get to the crag and see sandstone with temps in the 80s, felt right at home! What type of rock do you feel most at home on? 📷: @stephenrbarnes

I’ve had a lot of people ask how I deal mentally with being injured and not being able to do much. So I’m gonna let you guys in on a trick I developed when I was in a wheelchair after my cliff fall. This trick also works for when you’re having a bad day or going through a tough time. Imagine your life as a piece of string, about three feet or so. Now take a mental marker and mark out about 91 centimeters. Each centimeter equals approximately a year of your life. Take a look at the string as a whole, nothing just how small a centimeter is compared to the rest of the string. Now take your mental marker and mark out the time you’ve been injured. Unless it’s a lifelong injury, chances are you’re just making a tiny dot. You might even need a microscope to see it. Now look at your string as a whole again. Can you even see the dot? That’s how little impact your time being injured is having on your life. It’s just a tiny blip in your existence, and it will pass quickly with the rest of your life ahead of you. It will pass even faster if you use the time to read books, develop a new hobby, find a new favorite coffee shop, do anything other than focus on how much it sucks to be injured. It’s just a teeny tiny dot on a string. Whenever you’re feeling down about being injured, picture your string. Picture it vast and huge, with all your life events crammed onto it along the way. And look at your dot, look at how minuscule it is compared to everything else. See the blank expanse of string stretching out before you. This may sound like an acid trip of a trick, but I promise you it works! And to be fair, I was on some pretty heavy painkillers when I thought of it 😉

Yesterday my reusable bag broke while crutching my way way to my car, and the drinks I had just bought exploded all over the parking lot. I hopped around picking up glass shards until a couple came up and helped me clean it all up. They were super nice, and the girl offered me a hug after. She seemed to think I was having a bad day and as they left said, “hope your day gets better!” It kind of took me back, because I didn’t think I was having a bad day. My bag broke and my drink exploded. It happens. The universe doesn’t hate me, my life isn’t over. My bag just broke, not a big deal. At least, that’s how I chose to see the situation. The cool thing about being human is that you get to choose how you react to things, and you get to choose how you interpret what’s happening or being said to you. I see this all the time; something bad or inconvenient will happen to someone in the morning, and they’ll say “ugh, I guess it’s just going to be a bad day!” Well of course it’s going to be a bad day. You just decided that it was. Now you’re going to spend the entire day collecting evidence to support your decision, instead of focusing on why that day is good. Today, if something annoying or bad or inconvenient happens to you, try choosing to not let it get to you. Choose to see it in the most positive light possible, then move on with your day with the outlook that today will be a good day. Choose good days, because they’ll add up to a good life.
