A story of how I nearly had a heart attack.
This is Freyja's favorite park. It's got two gates. I always check both gates...I guess I didn't check well enough. The back gate was open, just enough for her to slip through.
Freyja's biggest trigger is people on bikes. Someone on a bike broke into our house and since then, it's been then one thing she is absolutely agressive about. We've been working on it for a long time, but we are lucky if I can get a momentary recall from it if she's off leash.
I was having Freyja practice downstays when a bike came by in the distance. She immediately runs to the fence line, but called off of it SO well. However, another person ran by, and she went back to the fence. That's when I noticed it was open. You can hear my very stern "leave it" and then I dropped my phone in a lets-not-panic-but-quickly-run-to-your-dog moment. To my complete surprise, she did leave it and turned back to me.
I feel like an idiot for not realizing the fence was open, but amazed that Freyja recalled off her most intense trigger. Now to go have a drink.
Moral of the story: Check gates. Train your dog. #dogtraining #blackdog #reactivedog #counterconditioning #labmix #gspmix #germanshorthairedpointer #dog
