I’d probably be vegan if it weren’t for Chik Fil a. It’s a serious weakness! I know, I have problems. Seriously, though, I wanted to share more on #intermittentfasting (IF) because it has helped me so much in my quest to lose the baby weight and also to maintain my weight. And it has frankly been the easiest and most sustainable approach to stick to for myself and my husband. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
WHY INTERMITTENT FASTING? There is mounting evidence to suggest that IF is not just a fad. Studies in humans have shown that IF is a safe, effective, realistic approach for weight loss and diabetes prevention in those at risk. It’s very clear and obvious that we should eat more fruits and veggies, fiber, healthy protein, and fats, and avoid sugar, refined grains, processed foods. But also timing when and how you eat plays a major role in overall health. When we don’t eat and snack, our insulin levels go down and our fat cells can release their stored sugar to be used as energy. The entire idea of IF is to allow our insulin levels to go down far enough and long enough for us to burn off fat. So just changing the timing of your meals and extending your overnight fast can significantly benefit your metabolism. This is also called circadian rhythm fasting-- where you limit all eating and meals to an 8-10 hour period during the day and outside of that, you don’t eat. Obviously you should talk to your doctor about what’s right for you and folks with eating disorders, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not attempt this unless they are under the supervision of their physician. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
MY EXPERIENCE: I follow this approach mon-fri and on the weekends I loosen up a bit. There are many ways to do IF but what I do is: no eating from 8pm- 12 or 1pm the next day. Then I eat 1 normal sized meal and 2 snacks + my iced tea. I stay hydrated and I listen to my body so if I’m starving, I’ll eat, but your body gets used to this new ‘rhythm’ really quickly. Staying hydrated really helps me curb my hunger. My favorite go to’s are Kale salad with a lean protein or a lentil soup and nuts, fruits, vegetables. Do you guys do this? Do you have any questions about IF? Have you lost weight?
