Let's talk AAC🙈Augmentative and Alternate Communication... Not many people may know what this is.. Alot of the population of children that I work with have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and have trouble learning and understanding language and using language to communicate their wants and needs, thoughts, feelings etc. That's why I like to try and use a total communication approach with my clients and provide them with many options to learn language and communicate such as visuals, communication boards, sign language, gesture, verbal information as well as physically modelling/explicit teaching of skills and tactile cues. It's not a "one fits all" model and we are forever looking at an individual; their strengths, challenges and how to change OUR methods so that the child can learn and will respond. I love using Language boards for core vocabulary (language that can be used across all contexts) as well as activity- specific fringe vocabulary throughout my sessions.
I know there are alot of myths about AAC like it will hinder a child's oral language ❌
Often I hear parents saying to me "but I know they understand what I am saying" "they aren't listening" "they're just being naughty" "but I can understand them" yes this may be true some of the time just like every child has their moments but let's think how many times we use visuals or devices in our day e.g calenders, diary's, setting alarms on our phones, setting reminders, making 'to-do' lists etc. We do it all the time without thinking. So while ever some of the statements above may be true, verbal information is so easily lost so if we can't remember everything without using our go to devices such as phones, then why should we expect our kids to remember everything ! "If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn" 🙌
