My father broke my heart way before any man had a chance to. .
When I was three, my father killed a man. My father killed a police officer; he killed a man courageously doing his job. That is the legacy that I, his only child, was left with. So instead of teaching me how to build stuff, how to drive, or how to pick a boyfriend, my father taught me that men are not to be trusted.
He taught me that bad men exist. He taught me that scary psychopaths can have little girls, and never be present to protect them. .
When I was a teen I met an amazing man, and I lucked into his amazing father. This honourable man showed me what a man and father should be. He fought in two wars! I gave him respect I reserved for no man. He was the first adult in my whole life to tell me he was proud of me. I cannot tell you how much that meant to me and how much the absence of that statement hurts a child and teen. .
And so a Happy Father's Day to my now-passed father-in-law as well as my husband who learned from his own how to be a kind and dedicated father.
