Many of us seem to spend an incredible amount of time and energy chasing dream jobs, bigger paychecks, better cars, fancy homes, vacations and a higher worldly social status. We have sadly become distracted and absorbed by this dunya, and lost sight of our purpose.
We are warned about this in the Qur’an: “Rivalry in worldly increase distracts you (from the remembrance of Allah), till you come to the graves” (102:1-2)
But if we stop for a minute and reflect on all our wordly efforts. How it will seem like in the end? It is described in the Qur’an that we shall feel as if we had stayed in this world only one evening or one morning! "It will be, on the Day they see it, as though they had not remained [in the world] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof.” (79:46)
We should not go to extremes in our asceticism, temperance, and renunciation of the worldly life. We are permitted to ask Allah for goodness in this life and we should not let our preparation for the Hereafter cause us to neglect our duties in the world. Allah has given us a supplication in the Qur'an that should define our attitude towards this life.
Our Lord, give us goodness in this life and goodness in the Hereafter and save us from the punishment of the Hellfire.
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:201
We should behave in this world with the knowledge that it will one day come to an end. We should ask Allah for goodness and comfort along our journey, but we must keep in mind that the final destination is the grave and the Day of Resurrection. We should do our best in this life to perform many good deeds in hope that Allah will reward us with bliss in Paradise forever.
We have the opportunity for high stations of Jannah – to meet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to meet the blessed companions (May Allah be pleased with them all), and most of all to see Allah, The Most High! Let us all strive for this, May Allah get rid of the dunya that our hearts are attached to so that we may return to Him, so that our hearts are clean on the day that, “Children and wealth will not benefit, except whoever comes with a sound heart” [Qur’an 26, 88-89].
