As our SWA Employees and Retirees gather the week to honor our extraordinary fearless leader, wanted to share my own personal thoughts on lessons learned from Herb:
Treat everyone equally, whether Kings or Janitors, for each has an important role in the world and deserves your upmost respect.
If you believe in something, fight for it with all your heart and soul.
Affirmation is key. Make people feel they are irreplaceable and unrepeatable and that you simply cannot imagine how you would get along without them. Your belief in them will fuel their belief in themselves and they will be able to move mountains.
If something really scares you, be brave and do it anyway.
Listen intently and make the person you are talking to feel as if they are the only person in the room and the only person who matters.
Do not ask others to do anything that you would not do yourself. Jump in and work side-by-side with them.
Work extremely hard and then play equally as hard.
Always celebrate both the large and small victories.
You can be a shrewd businessman/businesswoman and a fierce competitor and still lead with your heart - these two thing can absolutely coexist.
Above all, show people you care deeply and love fiercely. For in life, when it all comes down to it, that’s what truly matters.
Thank you, Herb, for being our quixotic, irreplaceable, unrepeatable Leader. We are all infinitely better for having known you.
