Memories - 33/365
I always thought I was the bravest one. Not scared of anyone or anything. And then I happened to witness Muthacha's death. That I think made me melt down. It made me vulnerable. It made me shrink inside. And then I witnessed the biggest role reversal ever.
Forget DTH, it was that era when we had just began hearing 'Cable TV lag raha hai' from everyone around. We had to wait for Acha's return while I was in 12th standard for the Cable TV to get installed at our place.
So? Did we not watch Cable TV? As the famous Hindi saying goes, 'Ek aur ek gyaraah'. I was mighty scared of darkness. I still am. But we would wait for Amma to start snoring before escaping from the bedroom to the living room. And then the little one will shut the door and jam the little space beneath it with the floor mat. She would then guide me out to the balcony. We would join the wire of our old antenna with a cable wire of the neighbours that hung near our railing. She would light up the torch and I would do all the 'pin lagao' engineering part.
We would then get inside, switch on the old, black-and-white Weston television set and try tuning in the Cable TV late night movies. Once the movie was fairly visible and audible amongst the grains on the screen and the noise disturbances, we would both feel like we have scaled up Everest.
Such silly movies like 'Aaj ki aurat', 'Shiva', 'Indira', 'Sanam Bewafaa', 'Nafrat ki Aandhi', 'Farz ki Jung', 'Himmat aur Mehnat', we have watched in this crazy manner.
The movie would run up till about 1-1.30 at night and Amma will wake us up at 5.30. We would still be up without any complaints because life was full of adventures.
I swear I couldn't have done it without the little one pushing me because even now I try and avoid getting out once it is dark. She used to scare me by switching off the mains, making wierd sounds and shaking the bed at night. Miss those fun-filled, full of secrets life and my little brave girl for company.
