Mother Armenia (Mayr Hayastan) is a 20th century historical monument carrying huge cultural significance and representing female personification of Armenia itself.
The current statue replaces a monumental statue built in 1950 and devoted to Joseph Stalin as a victory memorial for World War 2.
One of the outstanding architects on that period, R. Israyelyan, designed the pedestal realizing that “the glory of dictators is temporary”. He believed that the statue of Stalin would not remain there for long time; thus, he made the pedestal resemble a traditional Armenian church architecture.
Only in 1962, 9 years after Stalin’s death, his statue was removed from the pedestal and replaced by Mother Armenia. #armenia #travel #explore #wanderlust #exploring #adventure #journey #monument #statue #ancient #history
