On September 22, our Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope saw a powerful flare of high-energy light from this blazar. At the same time, the National Science Foundation’s (@nsfgov) IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole detected a neutrino — a high-energy cosmic particle — from the same direction.
The neutrino was the first we’ve ever detected from a source outside our galactic neighborhood, and this discovery is also the first time we’ve seen light and a neutrino from the same black hole source. Fermi and IceCube’s work represents a new chapter in multimessenger astronomy – viewing the same event using different messengers like light, particles and gravitational waves.

Somehow I managed to sneak my way into an invite to participate in this years Global physics photowalk, and on June 1, 2018 I had the privilege of visiting SNOLAB. I still suspect maybe they made a mistake haha, but nevertheless I feel lucky to have had the chance to visit, and be included with such a great group of photographers! Thought I'd share a few fun ones here.
SNOLAB is an underground science laboratory specializing in neutrino and dark matter physics. Located 2 km below the surface in the Vale Creighton Mine located near Sudbury Ontario Canada, SNOLAB is an expansion of the existing facilities constructed for the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) solar neutrino experiment.

Regrann from @nytimes - Deep in a mountain in southern Russia, in a small town called Neytrino, scientists are tracking one of the universe’s most elusive particles. For the last half-century, Neytrino’s main business has been the study of the tiniest insubstantial bit of matter in the universe, an ephemeral fly-by-night subatomic particle called the #neutrino. Last year, @maksimbabenko photographed this lab at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory, which is hidden underneath 12,000 feet of rock. Inside, vats of liquid wait to record the flight of neutrinos from the center of the sun, from exploding stars, atomic reactors and the Big Bang itself, carrying messages through time. “Neutrinos are the ghost riders of the cosmos, mostly impervious to the forces, like electromagnetism, with which other denizens of nature interact,” explains our reporter Dennis Overbye, who’s been covering the universe for more than 3 decades. “Neutrinos cruise unmolested through rocks, the earth and even our bodies. In the words of a famous poem by John Updike, they ‘insult the stallion in his stall.’” The people working at Baksan share an underground union with scientists scattered around the world in equally deep places — in South Dakota, Ontario, Italy, Japan and at the South Pole. With equipment frozen deep into ice beneath Earth's South Pole, humanity appears to have discovered a neutrino from far across the universe.

If confirmed, this would mark the first clear detection of cosmologically-distant neutrinos and the dawn of an observed association between energetic neutrinos and cosmic rays created by powerful jets emanating from blazing quasars (blazars). Once the Antarctican IceCube detector measured an energetic neutrino in 2017 September, many of humanity's premier observatories sprang into action to try to identify a counterpart in light.

And they did. An erupting counterpart was pinpointed by high energy observatories including AGILE, Fermi, HAWC, H.E.S.S., INTEGRAL, NuSTAR, Swift, and VERITAS, which found that gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 was in the right direction and with gamma-rays from a flare arriving nearly coincidental in time with the neutrino.

Дело обстояло так: мы отправились на Кавказ работать над проектом о Баксанской нейтринной обсерватории. Чтобы вместе и тексты, и видео, и аудио (мы все еще не теряем надежд его выпустить, да). Разумеется, в процессе работы все шло не по плану: сель нарушил электроснабжение обсерватории, неизвестные разбили стекла арендованной нами машины перед важнейшим днем съемок, а к чуть ли не главному герою фильма - местному учителю физики Гирину - нас случайно привели его ученики.
Вернувшись в Москву, я стала рассказывать руководителю редакции, как хорошо мы поснимали, каких героев нашли, что у нас и сель, и стихи о нейтрино, а он мне: "Аня, из этого надо собрать фильм. 15 минут. К 30 ноября". Стоял конец сентября, и тогда я... эммм... не очень обрадовалась перспективе работать над фильмом. А теперь понимаю: все было не зря. Оказалось, что это то, о чем я всегда мечтала. И теперь хочу снимать еще!
Кстати, фильм вышел не на 15 минут, а на 35. И мне будет очень приятно, если вы не пожалеете этого времени и посмотрите, что у нас получилось.

For the first time, a high-energy neutrino that hit Earth has been traced back to its cosmic birthplace. The subatomic particle, bearing an energy of nearly 300 trillion electron volts, came from a mysterious type of galaxy called a blazar (illustrated) 4 billion light-years away, in the direction of the constellation Orion. This discovery marks “the beginning of what we call neutrino astronomy,” says astrophysicist Angela Olinto. Astronomers may be able to use the tiny particles to reveal secrets of cosmic oddities like a blazar, which is powered by an enormous black hole that launches a jet of energetic particles toward Earth. This detection, which occurred September 22, 2017, also suggests that blazars are a source of cosmic rays, other high-energy invaders that are made up of protons and atomic nuclei. It’s been hard to track the sources of high-energy neutrinos: IceCube, the observatory that sits within a cubic kilometer of ice in Antarctica, reported only 10 high-energy neutrino detections with a well-defined incoming direction in the year and a half before this find. Part 3: “Fermi’s LAT monitors the entire sky in gamma rays and keeps tabs on the activity of some 2,000 blazars, yet TXS 0506 really stood out,” said Sara Buson, a NASA Postdoctoral Fellow at Goddard who performed the data analysis with Anna Franckowiak, a scientist at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron research center in Zeuthen, Germany. “This blazar is located near the center of the sky position determined by IceCube and, at the time of the neutrino detection, was the most active Fermi had seen it in a decade.” NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope is an astrophysics and particle physics partnership, developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy and with important contributions from academic institutions and partners in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden and the United States. Part 2: “The most extreme cosmic explosions produce gravitational waves, and the most extreme cosmic accelerators produce high-energy neutrinos and cosmic rays,” says Regina Caputo of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, the analysis coordinator for the Fermi Large Area Telescope Collaboration. “Through Fermi, gamma rays are providing a bridge to each of these new cosmic signals.” The discovery is the subject of two papers published Thursday in the journal Science. The source identification paper also includes important follow-up observations by the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov Telescopes and additional data from NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and many other facilities. On Sept. 22, 2017, scientists using IceCube detected signs of a neutrino striking the Antarctic ice with energy of about 300 trillion electron volts—more than 45 times the energy achievable in the most powerful particle accelerator on Earth. This high energy strongly suggested that the neutrino had to be from beyond our solar system. Backtracking the path through IceCube indicated where in the sky the neutrino came from, and automated alerts notified astronomers around the globe to search this region for flares or outbursts that could be associated with the event.
Data from Fermi’s Large Area Telescope revealed enhanced gamma-ray emission from a well-known active galaxy at the time the neutrino arrived. This is a type of active galaxy called a blazar, with a supermassive black hole with millions to billions of times the Sun’s mass that blasts jets of particles outward in opposite directions at nearly the speed of light. Blazars are especially bright and active because one of these jets happens to point almost directly toward Earth.
Fermi scientist Yasuyuki Tanaka at Hiroshima University in Japan was the first to associate the neutrino event with the blazar designated TXS 0506+056 (TXS 0506 for short).

Part 1: For the first time ever, scientists using NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope have found the source of a high-energy neutrino from outside our galaxy. This neutrino traveled 3.7 billion years at almost the speed of light before being detected on Earth. This is farther than any other neutrino whose origin scientists can identify.
High-energy neutrinos are hard-to-catch particles that scientists think are created by the most powerful events in the cosmos, such as galaxy mergers and material falling onto supermassive black holes. They travel at speeds just shy of the speed of light and rarely interact with other matter, allowing them to travel unimpeded across distances of billions of light-years. The neutrino was discovered by an international team of scientists using the National Science Foundation’s IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station. Fermi found the source of the neutrino by tracing its path back to a blast of gamma-ray light from a distant supermassive black hole in the constellation Orion. “Again, Fermi has helped make another giant leap in a growing field we call multimessenger astronomy,” said Paul Hertz, director of the Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Neutrinos and gravitational waves deliver new kinds of information about the most extreme environments in the universe. But to best understand what they’re telling us, we need to connect them to the ‘messenger’ astronomers know best—light.” Scientists study neutrinos, as well as cosmic rays and gamma rays, to understand what is going on in turbulent cosmic environments such as supernovas, black holes and stars. Neutrinos show the complex processes that occur inside the environment, and cosmic rays show the force and speed of violent activity. But, scientists rely on gamma rays, the most energetic form of light, to brightly flag what cosmic source is producing these neutrinos and cosmic rays.
