When I first heard the rumors about Jimmy and Kyrie teaming up this offseason, I wasn’t convinced, until Butler named the Nets, Knicks and Clippers as his preferred trade definitions. Both are young teams who will have lots of cap space this upcoming summer, and Irving has already shown that he wants to be the leader of his team, and he and Jimmy could be that for any of these young teams. I think he would happily get his pay day and be the primary option alongside his friend Jimmy Butler. I also found it interesting that two of the teams Butler named were Brooklyn and New York, which are both very close to Kyrie’s home town of New Jersey.
It doesn’t make sense for him to leave Boston, where he is in a situation where he could probably win a championship within the next three years. But did it make sense for him to leave a team that had just reached three straight Finals in Cleveland? He has an ego, and Boston has some young talent that could rival his in a few years. He’s friends with Jimmy Butler, and Butler named three teams able to sign both him and Kyrie next offseason. It looks like it’s going to happen.
I would love to see Kyrie and Jimmy team up in New York. If the Knicks could pull off a deal involving Trae Burke and more, Hardaway would probably have to be traded too, instead of Frank Ntlikina for Jimmy Butler and then sign Irving next offseason, they could play Kyrie at the one, Butler at the two, Knox at the three (assuming he has the rookie and sophomore year in expecting him to), Porzingis at the four, and Kanter at the five. I think they would be a contender and a very fun team to watch.
