Introverts don't hate people. Most actually really love people but are incredibly particular with whom they expend their energy. And many are fascinated with human behavior which is why many tend to watch and observe more than they speak, i.e., exhausting.
Introverts aren't necessarily shy (🙋). Many can lecture on stage or write incredibly vulnerable pieces online but when asked to mingle in the crowd, tense up and feel they have to be "on" which drains their energy and, again, exhausts them.
Small talk is one of those things that feels like sandpaper to their psyche... Superficial and phony but a necessary evil to dive into the depths with people - where they truly thrive as good listeners and feel comfortable shedding and exposing their layers.
But even though they love those bare-all conversations, after too long they need to retreat to process and recover from their ever-busy minds... Alone.♥️ This is how they take care of themselves (which is why awareness of our personality types/traits is yet another important part of our over-all wellness).
