Day 5: Even though the morning is a bit late waking up at 5:00am, I still have enough time to put the day’s priorities in order and be out walking by 6:00am. Morning fog hangs in the air - misty patches hovering between stands of poplar, tag alders, rocks, and rising off the surface of water. A few climbs that require energy leading into North Bay greet me on the way. One is around the corner when I first start walking, and the second is a long, winding ‘S’ curve 3.5 kilometres in distance that I’ve been told climes 1,300 metres. From the top of this hill that takes me 45 minutes to ascend is a long drawn out series of slow, relentless grade elevations that essentially bring me to the doorstep of the Bay, gaining to 1,500 metres. A massive descent into the city through walls of granite and Canadian Shield plunges me into the day’s destination. A warm lunch with celebratory pint, make a booking.com reservation downtown while I eat, then take a short walk over to “Lefebvre’s Source for Adventure”, potentially the best store this far north for hike and camp gear. I buy new boots that feel so much better, with a few pair of merino smart wool socks. Walk to the hotel, check in, hang everything that is wet to dry, then realize how tired I am, falling asleep a few times. I write up the day’s post to Instagram, then slowly fade into a much deserved sleep. Today’s walk: 36.43 km/50,684 steps. @jaysonzaleski for more.
