A Yellow-headed Caracara up close performing a call in the lowland rainforest at Metropolitan Nature Park.

These raptors often perches at treetops in small groups. It also patrols along roads and rivers, searching for dead animals, and it follows the ploughs in order to catch the small disturbed animals.

I took this photograph in Svalbard near the Nordenskiöldbreen (Nordenskiöld Glacier). Roughly 60% of the Svalbard archipelago is still covered with glaciers and the islands feature many fjords, mountains and on top of this a relatively healthy polar bear population. Protected areas make up 65% of this unique archipelago.

Repost from @mattiasklumofficial // Some good news!!! ”Forty years ago, Dian Fossey and the world were devastated when a family of mountain gorillas — named Group 4 — was decimated by poachers. Group 4 was the very first group of gorillas to be studied by Dr. Fossey after she established the Karisoke Research Center and included individuals like Uncle Bert, who she named after her own uncle, and Digit, the first gorilla to accept her presence.” Over the course of 1978, four gorillas in Group 4 were killed by poachers and another three died as a result of the group’s disruption. By December of that year, only three of the original 11 group members remained together.
With her beloved Group 4 destroyed, and the mountain gorilla population headed toward a low point of only about 240 individuals, Fossey feared the species would go extinct before the year 2000.
Instead, today, due to the intensive protection efforts Fossey initiated, mountain gorillas have reached a new historic milestone: their numbers have gradually increased over the past 30 years, and are up from 240 to 604, based on the latest census. (Another separate population of 400 individuals bring the total number of mountain gorillas to just over 1,000). I photographed this magnificent mountain gorilla in the Volcanos National Park, Rwanda.

It's #FeelGoodFriday and what en exciting way to end off the year with news of conservation organisations aiming to protect 30% of the World's Wild Lands by 2030!

The goal of the effort, called the Wyss Campaign for Nature, is to help nations conserve 30 percent of the planet in a natural state by the year 2030 by creating and expanding protected areas, encouraging the international community to establish more ambitious protected area targets, investing in science, and inspiring conservation action and new investments around the world.

These stories and collaborations bring hope in a time when we need it most. Working together we can achieve great things and protect biodiversity around the world.
We hope this inspires you to contribute to the better health of this planet in any small way.

Bartolomé Island, Galapagos has a volcanic cone that provides nice views of the other islands. This island is perhaps most famous for its Pinnacle Rock, which is the distinctive characteristic of this island, and a representative landmark of the Galápagos. Bartolomé is one of the "younger" islands in the Galápagos archipelago and is together with Sulivan Bay on Santiago island, named after the naturalist and lifelong friend of Charles Darwin, Sir Bartholomew James Sulivan, who was a lieutenant aboard HMS Beagle. #protectbiodiversity #ecosystemservices #mattiasklum #galapagos #ecuador @mattiasklumofficial @natgeotravel @natgeo @irisalexandrov @alexandrovklumofficial

Two Galapagos marine iguanas posing like statues of stone in the late evening. Scientists figure that land-dwelling iguanas from South America must have drifted out to sea millions of years ago on logs or other debris, eventually landing on the Galápagos. From that species emerged marine iguanas, which spread to nearly all the islands of the archipelago. Follow me @mattiasklumofficial to see other remarkable creatures and images from our projects around the world. Each island hosts marine iguanas of unique size, shape and color, like these beauties. Beauty or beast? What you can see in this picture is a palm oil field. Once, the same place was home to a vast biodiversity and thousands of wild animals. These fields are the reason why we support @savetheorangutan_org

Glad to see Second largest lizard in the world after Komodo Lizard in North Sumatra!
Here is Asian water monitor (Varanus salvator), they can reach 3 meters in total length! Juvenile lizards are quite brightly coloured with yellow blotches against a darker background and yellow bands on the tail.
Most species of Varanus are exclusively carnivorous, and (Varanus salvator) is no exception ^_^

Thanks to the volunteers who came out yesterday morning to help plant the saplings that were kindly donated to us by the @woodlandtrust and @mayorofldn for National Tree Planting Week and to the @crt_londonandse_volunteers for the equipment and help!

In the same way that on a personal level living plastic-free was just the beginning of the changes I made in trying to live as sustainably as possible, so Plastic-Free Hackney as a campaign group aims to focus on more than just this issue - plastic is by far the most pervasive and visible example of the damage were causing to the planet however it doesn’t stop there and therefore neither should we: planting trees is just another aspect in helping fight climate breakdown, increase biodiversity and the myriad of other benefits planting trees brings. If we’re going to create a cleaner greener world for our children we need to do whatever we can.
If you’d like to volunteer at one of our next events or get involved please sign up to our mailing list via our website or get in touch ✌🏼💚🌳🌎

A Scaly-breasted Hummingbird taking a little break from his afternoon foraging round.
These hummingbirds primarily feed on nectar taken from a variety of brightly colored flowers, they also take some small spiders and insects - important sources of protein particularly needed during the breeding season to ensure the proper development of their young.
I like capturing images of them to see and enjoy the remarkable detail of these tiny fast birds.
