🚨PSA: check the ingredients in your styling products // heat protectants.
A LOT of heat protectants are littered with plastics and silicones that coat your hair to protect it from heat. While heat protectants are a great shield for your hair, you don’t want one with silicones in it.
🚫Why? Because when in direct contact with heat (i.e. flat iron), the plastics applied on your hair melt and literally are baked into your hair. If you struggle with dandruff, lack of volume, or dry and brittle hair, this is most likely why.
⚠️These are the two biggies you should watch for:
💥DMDM Hydantoin is a zinger, y’all. It’s a formaldehyde releaser preservative, which means it releases small amounts of formaldehyde (yes, the same thing used to embalm corpses) in order to keep products from expiring sooner. Essentially, it manufactures a longer shelf life of products.
💥Also, liquid formaldehyde in the bottle turns into a gas when treated on hair with a flat iron, releasing its carcinogenic properties into the air. This is bad juju, y’all, and not good for you or the environment.
💥ALSO (yes, there’s more), straightening formulas that have DMDM in them have been recalled in the EU, Canada, Australia, and Brazil, but not in the US. Japan has also banned the use of DMDM in their products. Just because a product is sold in the US does👏🏻not👏🏻mean👏🏻it’s super safe or healthy, or that “everyone is using it,” because tons of other countries know better🤷♀️ Lucky for you, MONAT is sold in the UK and Canada, and doesn’t have this shenanigans in it🙌🏼
⚡️Dimethicone is the other one to watch for. It’s a man-made silicon oil used in most personal care products. While the FDA has approved its use in products, it forms a plastic-like barrier on your scalp, which contributes to frizz, lack of hair growth, and a flaky scalp. It also traps everything under it—including bacteria—that prevents the scalp from performing its normal activities. MONAT says no to to all silicones, and actually detoxes your hair to rid your scalp of all this gunk.
✨Long story short, your hair deserves better. Your hair deserves MONAT.
