‘Nevertheless, she persisted.’ Words you would expect to be said with pride and not irritation. In 2017, Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s objections were silenced. She persisted. Afterward, a colleague said those words in attempt to blame Warren, instead these words were embraced by feminists who applied it to women throughout history who persist inequality and injustice.
Recently @taylorswift posted an eloquent letter stating her stance. If you know me, you’ll be well aware of my own stances. But maybe we are new to each other. So, hello 👋🏻 Let’s get into this.
When I think of women I associate with ‘nevertheless, she persisted’ I think of the activists involved in #repealthe8th, the activists fighting for marriage equality in Northern Ireland and LGBTQ+ issues globally, calling out bigotry and bias and demanding better. Demanding control over our own bodies, the right to education, the right to love who we love and declare that love in legal union, the right to vote, the right to be in the room, to make our own decisions without the restrictions placed on us by those who are being bought by corporations or are standing in the way of the will of the people.
I believe in the identities and love stories of the LGBTQ+ community. I believe in democracy and progressive values. I believe that my generation will be socially and politically aware enough to research who they vote for and make an educated choice.
This week Taylor has inspired over 300k people to register to vote in the midterm elections. I enthusiastically encourage you to register to vote, and use that vote with immense pride because it was not always our right to do so.
Whatever your beliefs, whether they align with my own or not, talk to your friends/family/neighbours/online acquaintances. Speak out about your beliefs and values. Let your beautiful voice be heard. Change hearts and minds. Be the change you want to see. Don’t let anyone tell you that your voice or vote doesn’t count. If every voice was raised, every vote used we’d be unstoppable.
Peace and love. Remember that every time someone steps up to says who they are, the world becomes a better, more interesting place. ♥️🗳🏳️🌈
