Being famous for the title "Pearl of the Far East", Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) with more than 300 years of development has presented many ancient architectural constructions, famous vestiges and renowned sights. Unlike Hanoi - a traditional and peaceful city, Saigon is much more modern and dynamic. The city is known as a trade, industrial, scientific, technical, cultural centre and one of the largest tourist centres in Viet Nam.
The city was founded and settled by Khmers, and taken over by Vietnamese in 17th century. In 1859, French colonists conquered Saigon and made it the capital of Cochin China in 1862. With the culture being influenced by different countries and regions, the city remains numerous elegant architecture and broad boulevards that are still present to this day, as well as the exciting combination of French, Chinese, and local Vietnamese cuisine. After Vietnam War, the city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City, after the first Vietnamese president, but it's still well-known as Saigon.
Fun facts: Ho Chi Minh City is the place where 'quoc ngu' (national writing) was first generalized, and where the first books written in 'quoc ngu' were published.
