▪️ Vredefort Dome

The oldest impact crater on Earth is also the largest. Vredefort crater in South Africa, also called the VredefortDome, was originally 185 miles (300 kilometers) across, scientists estimate. A meteorite or asteroid bigger than South Africa's Table Mountain blasted out the giant crater 2.02 billion years ago.
Scientists have discovered at least five different mass extinctions, referred to as the Big 5, where 50% to 80% of all life died .Asteroids like the Vredefort are always floating around up there. ▪️ 👽👾 #ufospacenews #ufo #alien #spacecraft #extraterrestrial #news #nasa

▪️Did you know, ▪️A private nuclear-fusion company has heated a plasma of hydrogen to 27 million degrees Fahrenheit (15 million degrees Celsius)  in a new reactor for the first time — hotter than the core of the sun. Some other companies are also in the race to nuclear fusion and a few also speculated that by 2030 it will be up and running in a very efficient way.
Exciting to say the least.

During the Shuttle Program NASA built six airworthy Orbiters however only five flew in space. Enterprise was used during the initial approach and landing tests (ALT) of the orbiter but was never launched into orbit. Columbia, Challenger, Discovery and Atlantis formed the initial fleet. Endeavour was built to replace Challenger after the 1986 accident. All the Orbiters were named after pioneering sea vessels that conducted either exploration or research. School children from all over the world selected the name for Endeavour, the youngest Orbiter. All surviving Orbiters are now on display at various locations around the United States. =

Saturn orbits the Sun once every 29.4 Earth years.
Its slow movement against the backdrop of stars earned it the nickname of “Lubadsagush” from the ancient Assyrians. The name means “oldest of the old”.

#OTD in 1999, NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory— one of NASA's "Great Observatories," along with the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes and the now-retired Compton Gamma Ray Observatory — launched aboard the space shuttle Columbia on July 23, 1999, to view the universe in high-energy X-ray light.

Since its deployment, Chandra has trained its sharp eyes on objects ranging from nearby planets and comets to faraway supernovas and black holes. The instrument's observations over the past 19 year have helped reshape and refine astronomers' understanding of the universe.

Slow motion footage showing ignition of the Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSMEs) from a 16mm engineering camera at position E19. The sparks are not to ignite the engines (a common myth) but instead are designed to burn off any residual flammable hydrogen gas escaping from the engines as they start. The three SSMEs are ignited 6.6 seconds prior to liftoff of the vehicle (T-6.6). Once all engines are started and operating nominally at 104% thrust the solid rocket boosters are ignited (T-0) and the vehicle is released from the pad. Of particular interest in this video is the flow phenomena inside the engines, the dust covers blowing open on the three RCS thrusters (upper right), the formation of the “shock diamonds” in the Mach 10 exhaust plumes and the violent oscillations of the engine nozzles during the ignition process. ***[This footage is included in a fantastic official NASA production showing detailed slow motion footage from the various engineering cameras and narrated by NASA engineers, search “best of the best” on the NASA YouTube channel to watch the whole video.]***

In an effort to keep the cryogenic propellants inside the External Tank cool, its insulation was painted white to protect the tank from UV radiation as it sat in the sun on the launch pad. After the first two launches, STS-1 and STS-2, it became apparent that the one inch thick insulation was sufficient to protect the fuel inside and the tanks were left in their iconic, rust orange state from STS-3 onwards.

On June 29, 1995, Atlantis became the first space shuttle to dock at Russia's Mir space station. A Russian Mir-19 cosmonaut took this photo on July 4th, after a brief scientific joyride on the Soyuz spacecraft. This mission, STS-71, had a number of additional historic firsts: It was the hundredth U.S. human space launch conducted from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and it included the largest spacewalk ever undertaken in orbit and the first on-orbit change of shuttle crew |

Enjoy!

Saturn’s rings, made of countless icy particles, form a translucent veil in this view from our Cassini spacecraft. That little dot peeking through the ring gap is Saturn’s tiny moon Pan, which is about 17 miles across. Beyond, we can see the arc of Saturn itself, its cloud tops streaked with dark shadows cast by the rings.
This image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on Feb. 12, 2016, at a distance of approximately 746,000 miles (1.2 million kilometers) from Pan.
Although the Cassini spacecraft ended its mission on Sept. 15, 2017, an enormous collection of data about Saturn – the giant planet, its magnetosphere, rings and moons – will continue to yield new discoveries for decades to come.

Astrophotographer Miguel Claro managed to capture this image of the Milky Way glistening over an incredible landscape. Both Saturn and Mars could be seen shining against the core of the galaxy, as small yellow flowers grazed the green field in Mansaraz in Portugal's Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve. The photograph was captured during the spring equinox on March 20th, earlier this year.

Behold, Saturn. Seen here in January 2010, the rings on the day side are illuminated both by direct sunlight and by light reflected off the planet's cloud tops, while rings on the night side have been brightened to more clearly reveal their features.

Our Cassini spacecraft took this image during its time at Saturn, which ended on Sept. 15, 2017. Cassini's finale plunge was a truly spectacular end for one of the most scientifically rich voyages yet undertaken in our solar system. And although the spacecraft may be gone, its enormous collection of data about Saturn – the giant planet itself, its magnetosphere, rings and moons — will continue to yield new discoveries for decades.

Darker, cooler areas on the Sun – known as sunspots – have been mostly absent for almost two weeks, as of Feb. 1. A single, tiny one appeared on Jan. 31, but even that is hard to see in this rotating view from our Solar Dynamics Observatory. The video shows a rotating sun in filtered light for the past week, but it is even hard to tell the sun is rotating since there are just about no features.
This spotless period is a prelude to the approaching period of solar minimum next year, when the Sun’s activity will be at the low end of its 11-year cycle.

Jupiter: High-Altitude Clouds | NASA Juno
This image captures a high-altitude cloud formation surrounded by swirling patterns in the atmosphere of Jupiter's North North Temperate Belt region.

The North North Temperate Belt is one of Jupiter’s many colorful, swirling cloud bands. Scientists have wondered for decades how deep these bands extend. Gravity measurements collected by Juno during its close flybys of the planet have now provided an answer. Juno discovered that these bands of flowing atmosphere actually penetrate deep into the planet, to a depth of about 1,900 miles (3,000 kilometers). NASA’s Juno spacecraft took this color-enhanced image at 10:11 p.m. PDT on July 15, 2018 (1:11 a.m. EDT on July 16), as the spacecraft performed its 14th close flyby of Jupiter. At the time, Juno was about 3,900 miles (6,200 kilometers) from the planet's cloud tops, above a latitude of 36 degrees.

Citizen scientist Jason Major created this image using data from the spacecraft’s JunoCam imager.

I have pretty awesome colleagues! Amazing things are happening here :) In 2020 European Space Agency will send its rover to Mars to look for the traces of life. The rover is supposed to be controlled by operators commands from the Earth.
Guys from the Planetary Robotics Lab in the European Space Technology Center developed an obstacle avoidance and a path replanning software.
It allows the rover to detect and go around obstacles, which can appear in the path given by the controlers.(Because of that rover goes in the video from a stone to a stone. ->Stones are placed in the pre-planned path.) In practice it can allow controllers to send rover also "behind the corner", where they may not be so sure of the surface conditions. This way they can rapidly increase lifetime operational area and safety of the rover.

The coolest part is that they use just two cameras and a minimal computational power.
No obstacles, we go farther!

I am super happy to be here and see it live :) @levingerdes

Two aliens from the past.
The fastest aircraft in the history BlackBird 🐧🦅🖤 that was taking off only with one engine, because it couldn't handle with the airspeed that both engines produced.
A left engine was used first for odd flights and right engine first for even flights
And baby 🐣 👶 wingless spaceplane Martin Marietta X-24A (7.49 m. in lenght) however with rocket engine. The X-24 was droping launched from a huge B-52 Stratofortress at high altitudes for entries into orbit and to landing after expending its rocket fuel
BTW the rebuiled variant of the X-24A [X-24B]little bit looks like a Nighthawk 🦅💟
