Yesterday a really major event happened. The CEO and founder of SpaceX Elon Musk, announced plans to send back humans into deep space!! SpaceX is currently building a next generation 100% reusable rocket, the first of its kind.
Code Name: BFR.
The BFR is going to be a 2 stage super heavy launcher, capable of launching 100t to LEO, and with orbital refueling will be capable of sending 100t to the surface of Mars!
Not only did they update us on the BFR, they also showed the first few sections that have been built. And to prove it is fully next gen, it is made out of carbon fiber!
The BFR will be 9m wide, about 1m less wide than the Saturn V, but unlike the saturn V, the BFR is 9m wide from the bottom to the top.
The capabilities with such a rocket are endless. It is both a spaceship and a rocket and will allow engineers to care less about reducing the weight of payloads, something that is both time and money consuming, thus would render an interplanetary mission easier and less expensive.
What is even more amazing is the fact that the first trip to the Moon’s orbit will happen in 2023!
The lucky customer or first private space astronaut to go in deep space will be the Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa. Now where it gets even more amazing is that he will select 8 artists to join him on the trip to the Moon with the hope to inspire them to create wonderful art pieces. Whether it’s painters, writers, sculptors, musicians… He said what if Beethoven would have been around the moon, or picasso or michael Jackson, what would they have created?
They have an ig page @dearmoonproject
Now it is a long way for spaceX but it is one of the best news of the past few years!
I’d recommend going on space.com if you wish to read more about this amazing mission
Here are just screenshots from the presentation. And of MZ and Musk and of the BFR tooling to give you a sense of scale.
I'll post more about the BFR tmr
