Zach Divelbliss was in a car accident several years ago that left him in a coma for 6 weeks. When he came out of it, doctors told his family that he may never walk or talk again. Today Zach trains twice a week with Straight Shot coach @rebeccareifsnider where he does squats, deadlifts, ladder drills, hurdles, and a whole lot more than walking and talking again. Zach’s recovery hasn’t been easy, and his injuries have affected him greatly both physically and mentally. He still has a long way to go before he can get back to his passion of welding, but with his never-quit attitude, his positive outlook on his triumphs and setbacks, and his ability to laugh through it all, Zach makes progress in and out of the gym every day.

As many of you celebrated the Irish culture this past weekend with the festivities of St. Patrick’s Day, I wanted to jump on board and get into the sport and fitness culture of Ireland by interviewing my fellow trainer at the Y and Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Kevin Barry (@kevin_barry93). Kevin came to the US from Ireland to study exercise science and shares his story with us in this episode. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, NASM Personal Trainer and Strongman enthusiast John Taylor and I write love letters to our favorite lifts: the Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift, and Strict Press (overhead press). As a coach, I’m a big fan of variance in my programming of exercises. But these 4 movements are the foundation of my programming and show up every week in one form or another in my programming. You know how your workouts suffer on days when you don’t sleep well, and how it’s much easier it is to recover when you DO sleep well. Electrical muscular stimulation, compression, soft tissue work, cupping, and ice baths might be pieces of the recovery puzzle, but none can compete with sleep as the most beneficial recovery technique, along with nutrition and hydration. This is where sleep hygiene comes in. Sleep hygiene is the habits and practices that are conducive to sleeping well on a regular basis. In this episode , I discuss the best ways to insure a great night of sleep so you can recover from your workouts well, increase your productivity throughout the day, and improve your overall health.

Look around your gym and you’ll see signs that say “rack your weights” or “no cell phones”, but the gym etiquette list is a lot longer and more nuanced than that. For example, when is it ok to ask to share a squat rack with someone? Or when is it appropriate to drop your weights? In this episode I get together with a few of the personal trainers from the Frederick YMCA and we cover a wide range of gym etiquette topics, including the “why” “when” and “how” of grunting, and the importance of being on time for personal training sessions. How are those new year’s resolutions holding up after a week? If you’re like most people who make resolutions this time of year, I'm going to be honest with you...only 20% of you will stick with it past February. Being a personal trainer for the past 10 Januarys, I know how this works. People have the best intentions to get in shape, lose weight, get stronger, or start running, but sadly, 80% of these people will quit for one reason or another. Some studies have even found that only 8% of people keep their resolutions. So why is it so hard to accomplish these goals? Well, a lot of it has to do with how you set your goal in the first place. In this episode, I give you some examples of common fitness goals, and how each can be tweaked to be a bit better, and pull it all together to help you create SMART goals for yourself that will greatly increase the likelihood of your success!

Chris was a heavy kid who grew up in a poor family in Indiana. He ignored bullies and people who didn’t believe in him, and became successful in his career as an adult, but was near 300lb and borderline diabetic by his mid 30’s. Chris started training with me and taking my classes, and got serious about his diet to lose 70 pounds! Chris’ brutal honesty and inability to let people’s opinions get to him might make him seem like a bit of a tough cookie, but he explains how it’s helped him stay in his lane and focus on what he needs to do for his health and fitness.

If you visit a physical therapist for an injury, they’ll help you get back to moving pain free with a list of rehab exercises. But what if you aren’t injured? Do you still need to perform movements like rotator cuff exercises? Hip mobility drills? Low back and core stability drills? Well that depends...do you want a healthy rotator cuff? Mobile hips? Pat Mendonca is a radio DJ and just a few years ago weighed 266lbs while working a sedentary job and not thinking anything about his diet. After making small changes which turned into bigger changes in both his diet and his exercise habits, Pat has lost 80lbs and has run in several half marathons, 10 milers, and 5Ks. After getting his own health under control, this November Pat is paying it forward by highlighting men’s health issues on his radio show and his podcast (The Interesting People Podcast). Personal training has been my passion for a decade. I created Straight Shot because while training in person is where I began as a coach, I found I could only train so many people in a week. I wanted to help more people than I could reach in local gyms so I took the same system I use to train my clients and developed our program to reach anyone who wants to use it wherever they are.
I'm so thankful for every client I've had for being a part of my journey in the creation of this, and I'm grateful and excited to have all the Straight Shotters using the program!

Just stretching your hamstrings over and over probably isn't going to resolve those chronically tight and weak muscles that can cause nagging pain. Going at it using a multifaceted approach with joint capsule mobilizations, soft tissue work, stability drills, and full range of motion resistance exercises will put you on a better track towards strong and mobile hamstrings.

Jim was born with a severe vision impairment, but has never let anyone else tell him what he can’t do. He has run over 20 marathons and half marathons and is an active cyclist. At almost 55 years old, Jim decided to switch careers to pursue his passion of helping others and now works as a personal trainer. He truely lives out the “no excuses” mantra on a daily basis and is living proof that if you want something in life, you have to put in the work to make it happen. Jim shares his story with us in this episode, filled with motivation, humor, and honesty.
