Took a walk down the city’s memory lane with my kids today. My children felt fascination with somethings and found quite a few things amusing too.
For me it was nostalgic, as if I belonged to all the eras the city has seen! I felt my parents and grandparents in the walls, in the trees, and the courtyards of the three landmarks we were able to visit today. All the stories I had ever heard from #myammi and #myabba were a part of the stories of each of these buildings! We began our journey with the Frere Hall, where neglect broke my heart and haunted the children! Volumes upon volumes of dusty literary treasures were a sad sight. Litter covered steps welcomed us to the grand entrance of the magnificent building. The grandeur of the architecture compensated for the chipped and fallen off bricks everywhere in the structure! Next, we made a stop at Mohatta Palace, which truly enthralled my children! The gardens, and the building, the windows... everything charmed them! The entry ticket costs only PKR 30 which was a pleasant surprise to me! Indeed, it in one well preserved site, serving the purpose of a museum truly well! Our last stop was the TDF ghar!! If it were for me, I would spend hours reading in their library, or resting in one of their antique rocking chairs, or simply just standing in the balcony gazing at the Quaid’s Mausoleum in the near distance! From the floors, to the ceiling, the flowers, all seemed to have landed us on the sets of a 1920s historical romance! Their display of the photographs of Karachi from its golden years were informative for my children, while they made me wistful for the city to enter into another golden era soon inshaAllah!
We all need to make an effort to make our way to these glorious sites not only for the sake of education and information, but out of love for our city and its numerous treasures! They don’t cost much! Instead of investing our children’s valuable time only in exploring malls and food courts only (which is a must as well)!! #memorylane #reminiscence #citytour #landmarks #britisharchitecture #summerpalace #library #art #prepartition #subcontinent #karachi #kolachi
