“They told me that if I stayed they would not be responsible for my safety. I knew that meant… they will rape me and discover who I am, then they will kill me.” Shirine is transgender woman from #Syria. Because of her sexuality she has been arrested and spent many months in prison. She escaped with her life in #Syria after receiving death threats from both The Free Syrian Army and her own brother.
As part of #transweek, we are sharing stories of the transgender men and women who have lived through discrimination and continue to make their voices heard.
Read Shirine’s story shared with the #WhereLoveIsIllegal campaign, a platform for #LGBT stories of survival, at the link in our profile. At the link you can also see how to share your own experience of #discrimination and #survival and how you can support. Photo by @Hammond_Robin / @noorimages. This is a @witness_changeproject.
