Top Shot: Waiting for a Drop… | Photograph by Victor Breyl
#YourShotPhotographer Victor Breyl captured this moment of a bird in Israel trying to get a drop of water. Your Shot Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas writes, “The geometry of the moment is simple and effective. I love that the shapes are outlined so nicely against the background. I hope the bird got a little water!” This image was selected for the Daily Dozen on August 20, 2018.

Top Shot features the photo with the most votes from the previous day’s Daily Dozen, 12 photos chosen by the Your Shot editors from thousands of recent uploads. Our community votes for their favorite photo from the selection, and the Top Shot is showcased on the @natgeoyourshot Instagram account.

Weddings in the Arab region are many, obviously. But to share and publish is a big deal. As Arabs, we tend to view the special day as an intimate and private one. You would never show up to a wedding uninvited. And photography, whether you are conservative, wearing hijab or not, is viewed as something that many couples want to only print and show to close friends and family. Hence, although I have shot countless weddings in the region, I rarely have couples that allow me to showcase some of their wedding images. I get overexcited with the few images that I beg and plead and finally get to share.

“A Slinky is one of the most timeless toys,” writes Sasha Čukure (@europeanmommyof2) in her #WHPcircles submission caption. “Every time I watch one of the boys playing with it, it immediately brings me back to my childhood.” 👀

Photograph by @paulnicklen // When we took off from the sea ice in my little ultralight airplane and flew out over Lancaster Sound, I finally got to live a dream that I had been pursuing for over 10 years. Narwhals are incredibly elusive and live in a habitat that is very challenging to work in. The airplane gave us a glimpse into their world that I had always longed for. Sadly, this not in my new book "Born to Ice" but I do love the simplicity of the water, their body position and the rings of water rippling from their heads. To see many more images of narwhals please feel free to #followme on @paulnicklen. #nature #naturelovers #cuttingroomfloor #instagood #picoftheday #blackandwhite #gratitude

Photo by @FransLanting Adorable, but vulnerable, three cheetah cubs watch their mother hunt in the Serengeti Plains, a few weeks after they first emerged from a den inside the rocks where they spent their first month hiding from predators like lions, hyenas and leopards. More than half of all cheetah cubs do not survive the first four weeks of life and most of the rest do not make it beyond their first year. Cheetahs can’t climb trees like leopards, they can’t dig burrows like hyenas, and they’re not social like lions, so they are vulnerable no matter where they are.Follow me @FransLanting and @ChristineEckstrom for more images of cheetahs and other inhabitants of Wild Africa.
