Here is a simple exercise to learn to absorb and stabilize force. Depth drops are beneficial in developing stiffness to decrease the transition time in which it takes to absorb, stabilize, and produce force. A decrease in transition time from eccentric to concentric means less time spent on the ground when running.
Depth drops are a good place to start building this quality. All you need to do is step off and fall from a height you are comfortable at with the goal of creating tension as quickly as possible to stop the movement and "catch" yourself.
A few important cues to follow:
1. Neutral foot
2. Land in a partial squat position (knees should not be locked out!)
3. Keep knee overtop of the ankle and do not allow your knees to collapse inwards (you may have to decrease the height of the box)
4. Stick the landing, pause and repeat for 8-12 reps
5. Remember the goal of this exercise isn't to build fatigue but to increase the quality of movement!
