Master shot of the third installment in the PORTRAIT OF THE MIND SERIES
I started out just exploring the juxtaposition of three dimensional objects with two dimensional objects in what is "normally" the two dimensional world existing in a picture frame. Sure, pictures sometimes give the illusion of a third dimension, I thought it would be interesting to play around with actually creating one; an actual third dimension where one expects only two.
I thought I'd make a new goddess bust out of a box, instead of recycling/transforming one of my current styrofoam goddesses. And I figured if Im going to do a box I might as well give a nod to cubism. Wasn't that a challenge to people's perception of what they thought art should look like?
Then I sat with her. I looked and looked. Sometimes I saw her profile. Then I would see her straight on. She was this interesting shape shifter. And then, sometimes she became two: the profile of a man with a woman behind him looking straight ahead. I noticed the ceramic apple cookie jars on the studio shelf. But of course.
Did you ever consider that perhaps it wasn't an apple growing on the Tree of Knowledge? Orchids grow on trees. Why not mushrooms? I think it's a fun idea to play with: Eve shared some magic mushrooms with Adam, forever altering and expanding human perception.
So I'm curious, what did you see and how did you perceive it? Did you see all the mushrooms and see the object at the base of the stairs as just another mushroom? Did you immediately recognize it as an apple and see not one portrait but two on the box? And here I am, trying to share this three dimensional experience on a two dimensional platform. Funny.
