It was one of those Mort Kunstler meets Matthew Brady in a Virginia State Park kind of moments... except with women, horses, and a camera in place of guns and paint brushes. Like art, equestrians, too, have our own meta-culture and idiosyncrasies only those within understand... like the olfactory appeal to be around the intoxicating smell of your horse, the smile as you feel then pick hay out of your hair four hours later, and the anticipated impatient stomps of frustration from your mate when the jockey does not put that well-oiled saddle on quickly enough. Yet all technical and emotional quirks aside, Lake Anna is the place for the adventure your horse wants to share with you, if you were not there today already. She/he will love you for it- and you will love yourself a little more, just by making it all come together.
See, that is the thing about adventures with an animal you are deeply bonded with... the beauty, the smells, the people and creatures you meet along the way... these memory-makers help you fall in love with a better you. We grow better, which helps us become better friends, moms, lovers, workers, volunteers, and resourcers of our own gifts.
So when did you last go out and explore a park, monument, or landmark with a close friend, a child, or animal? How did it change you in the process? If you liked it, do it again. If it has been awhile, maybe it is time to do it again, too.
