Photo by Paul Nicklen @PaulNicklen | This curious bowhead whale came to greet me while I was diving in the Canadian Arctic. As I hovered in the frigid water along the north coast of Baffin Island, this whale came so close that it actually pushed me with its chin. Able to live over 200 years, bowhead whales have the longest life span of any mammal on Earth. Their populations were once almost wiped out by whaling, and they now face the new threat of a warming Arctic. Higher temperatures are rapidly melting sea ice, on which they rely for copepods, their main food source. #FollowMe at @PaulNicklen and explore my feed for more photos of whales. #bowhead #Arctic #ocean #underwaterphotography

"A police shield is covered in eggs and paint after a massive political demonstration when Evo Morales confirmed his candidacy for re-election in spite of the referendum that took place in 2017 which banned him from doing so," writes #YourShotPhotographer Michael Dunn. This photo was selected for the May 17, 2019 edition of our Photos of the Week series.

“Many photos we see at National Geographic are not so beautiful, but capture a moment in a unique way. I saw that in the photo of a political demonstration in La Paz, Bolivia. After decades covering the news, I thought I had seen pictures of every kind of unrest, often from the vantage point of the protesters. This photo centered on the hand of the police officer, outstretched behind his egg- and paint-splattered shield; we’re reminded of his humanity, though we cannot see his face. I don’t think I’ve seen a photograph like this before.” — @natgeo Partners Editorial Director and National Geographic Magazine Editor in Chief Susan Goldberg (@susanbgoldberg)

Photo by Robbie Shone @shonephoto | As evening descends upon the outside world, two cave explorers enter Er Long Dong and begin a long journey through the cave to the gigantic chamber known as Cloud Ladder Hall. This is one of the three known tunnels into the the big hall of the cave and it's probably the easiest to negotiate.

Choreographers Shivani Bhagwan (@shivanibhagwan) and Chaya Kumar (@chayakumar) are the brains behind BFunk (@bfunk). “BFunk stands for the two styles of dance that we teach: BhangraFunk and BollyFunk,” explains Shivani. “It’s a fusion between elements of our western upbringing and our eastern roots,” explains Chaya. “Our heritage is woven through every fiber of our work. Dance is not a recreation in India; it’s a part of our culture. It’s a means of celebration. It’s a means of storytelling. It’s a means of communication.”
According to Shivani, “#APAHeritageMonth is wonderful because it promotes education, drives conversation and builds awareness, and that is the birthplace for growth.”

Spice markets make for a brilliant mini-adventure exploration no matter where you travel. India is no exception — spice browsing and shopping here never disappoints. .

Wandering, questioning, exercising curiosity, perhaps adding something familiar and needed, or unfamiliar and unknown to one’s spice rack back home. For as many times as we’ve been to India, we always discover something new or encounter something unusual. And, we always meet someone interesting.⠀

The spread of stalls across Shimla’s lower bazaar features sacks and tins, and ancient wooden racks, drawers and dividers that ought to have a voice so that they might tell us their stories. Colors are earthy and bright, chili peppers of the deepest red, turmeric otherworldly yellow. Scents waft among it all. The whole and the ground; the sweet and the pungent; the blended and the masala’d — all of which makes Indian food so delicious and complex.⠀
